Thinking of getting your own pool cue? Best pool cues to buy

Are you sick of using the same old poor pool hall cues over and over?  Just think how much you could improve your game with a decent cue of your own!

How to choose a pool cue

Just like when choosing a Snooker cue there are a few factors to consider when you are buying a pool cue and you might be surprised just how much a decent cue improves your game.

Price

Definitely an important factor to anyone will be the price.  However, read any online buyer reviews on pool cues and one common theme will be you get what you pay for especially by people who bought cheap cues!

I think the point to take from this is buy what you can afford but be wary of cheap pool cues that are going to end up bent and warped in a few months time.

Of course you can pay hundreds of pounds for a cue but after a point on the price scale you are going to be paying for decoration and not how well the cue plays.

Cue weight and length

Heavier cues (20-21 oz) are recommended for beginners as they make it easier to add spin while intermediate to professional players will use a lighter cue (18-19 oz) as they allow greater control of the speed of the cue ball.  The standard length of a snooker cue is about 58 inches (147.5cm) but you can shorter or longer cues if you want to.

Cue tip

Pool cues come with hard or soft tips with different widths.  A harder tip is more consistent, obviously will be more durable and therefore last longer and also retain it’s shape better but more prone to miscues.  A softer tip can result in adding more spin to the cue, require more maintenance and needs replaced more often.  Tip width ranges from 11-14 mm with 13mm being the recommended tip width for beginners.
